Global Kratom Coalition Applauds California Senate Health Committee for Passing Assembly Bill 2365

The Global Kratom Coalition (GKC) commends the California Senate Health Committee for the successful passage of Assemblymember Matthew Haney's AB 2365. This significant legislative milestone marks a pivotal step toward establishing comprehensive regulations for the kratom industry in California, ensuring the safety, quality, and responsible sale of kratom products.

"Today's approval by the Senate Health Committee is a major step toward making AB 2365 California law," said Matthew Lowe, Executive Director of the Global Kratom Coalition. "The Committee's decision reflects a strong commitment to consumer safety through well-researched, science-backed standards. These standards recognize the complexities of the evolving kratom marketplace and the importance of distinguishing quality kratom products. As this bill moves forward, we encourage the California Legislature and kratom advocates from all sectors to support this essential bill."

AB 2365 introduces a comprehensive framework designed to safeguard consumers while maintaining access to leaf kratom and kratom extracts. Key provisions of the bill include defining what constitutes leaf kratom and kratom extracts, establishing packaging and labeling standards, enforcing age restrictions for purchases, requiring registration and rigorous testing protocols for kratom processors, and specifying enforcement measures for violations.

Of specific importance is that AB 2365 ensures that kratom products do not contain synthetic “kratom” derivatives that could create highly potent, adulterated products. In conjunction with this, the bill limits the metabolite 7-hydroxymitragynine (7OH) to 1% of the total alkaloid fraction in a kratom product. 7OH is found in almost undetectable amounts in dried kratom leaf, which limits the effect of this compound, which has a high affinity to opioid receptors. Manipulating kratom products to increase their potency artificially involves adding more than 1% 7OH as a fraction of total alkaloids, which makes them adulterated. Setting these limits ensures consumers are not inadvertently consuming dangerously potent products.

“Assemblymember Haney’s holistic approach in AB 2365 not only prioritizes consumer safety through robust safety measures but also ensures access to accurately labeled and responsibly formulated kratom products,” said Lowe.

The GKC emphasizes that continued support for AB 2365 is critical to its ultimate success. The Coalition urges all stakeholders, including legislators, industry participants, and consumers, to advocate for the bill's passage.

About the Global Kratom Coalition

The Global Kratom Coalition (GKC) exists to protect and expand access to leaf-based kratom around the world. The organization represents the interests of advocates committed to positive change benefiting consumers. The organization supports education and the development of kratom science, which is central to the GKC’s mission—to empower individuals worldwide with access to safe and responsibly sourced kratom products by advancing scientific research and sensible regulation.

The GKC operates on five key values:

  • Access: The belief that individuals should have a choice as to how they look after their health, informed by the latest unbiased information available.
  • Education: Providing accurate, evidence-based information about kratom (including on our website), allowing consumers to make informed decisions.
  • Advocacy: Serving as a united voice for kratom consumers worldwide, seeking fair and sensible regulations that prioritize consumer safety, freedom of information, and good sourcing and manufacturing practices.
  • Community: Fostering a global group of enthusiasts, experts, vendors, and advocates to promote the benefits of kratom and fight for informed and responsible use.
  • Responsibility: Promoting the responsible use of kratom and encouraging vendors to adhere to strict quality and safety standards so that consumers have access to products that are safe, well-manufactured, and appropriately labeled.

Kava Coalition Co-Authors Series on History of Kava for The Fiji Times

The Kava Coalition (KC) is proud to support a series of articles, "Kava: A Story of Misinformation and Resilience," which published recently in The Fiji Times. The series detail’s kava’s long history of safe, traditional use; reviews scientific literature to dismiss claims of liver toxicity, which arose in the early 2000s and still dictate some counties’ policies, despite their lack of scientific basis; and projects a bright future for the industry, as Pacific Island growers achieve record exports to supply the growing demand for kava products globally.

The three-part series, written by journalist Mattha Busby in partnership with KC, can be found in its entirety in the News section of the Kava Coalition’s website.

"Sharing accurate information about kava, so that consumers may make informed decisions, is KC’s fundamental mission," said Matthew Lowe, Executive Director of the Kava Coalition. "This series takes an unbiased look at kava’s history and sheds light on past misinformation which has hampered kava’s global availability."

The first article, "A History of Kava," explains the plant’s origins and its recent past. The second installment, "Moving Past Misinformation," describes the unfair stigma of liver toxicity still attached to kava today. And the third article, "Kava Today, Changing the Narrative," outlines the developing, global economy around kava.

"My interest in public health and policy attracted me to the subject of kava—a remarkable plant dogged by spurious health claims," said Busby. "I hope the reader finds this story to be as informative and illuminating as I did in researching and writing it."

The Fiji Times is a daily English-language newspaper published in Suva, the capital and largest city of Fiji. Each part of the "Kava…" series initially appeared in The Fiji Times on March 12, March 19, and March 25.

TruSkin Vitamin C Facial Serum Wins Shop TODAY 2024 Beauty Award

Shop TODAY has awarded plant-powered skincare brand TruSkin® a beauty award for its best-selling Vitamin C Facial Serum. The brand, currently a top trending brand per NielsenIQ, is thrilled that its hero product won best budget vitamin C serum.

Made with sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP), a gentle and effective form of vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and MSM, the serum encourages brighter, firmer, healthier skin without stripping the skin. With over 90,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, this product is the highest-rated vitamin C serum on Amazon.

Last week, the brand also received two 2024 SELF Beauty Awards for products launched in the past year: The Longevity Depuffing Eye Cream and Vitamin C Gentle Face Scrub.

Made with a unique blend of Bakuchiol, coffeeberry extract, and lingonberry stem cells, the Longevity Depuffing Eye Cream was designed with sensitive skin in mind. It is formulated to help reduce under-eye puffiness and brighten the eye area with an antioxidant-rich blend of nature’s finest ingredients. Bakuchiol—a plant-based and less irritating retinol alternative—reduces the look of under-eye wrinkles and improves firmness. Rich in caffeine, coffeeberry extract helps to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles, while lingonberry stem cells protects the skin from blue light damage and oxidative stress.

"For anyone looking to reduce under eye puffiness, this eye cream is a great option," said Dr. Marisa Garshick, a New York City-based dermatologist. "The combination of Bakuchiol, coffeeberry extract and lingonberry stem cells really helps promote youthful skin."

The second product, the Vitamin C Scrub, is made with yuzu lemon, Tahitian white sand, and SAP. The former is a powerhouse citrus fruit packed with vitamin C, which is a natural source of brightening benefits. Found on the beaches of Bora Bora, Tahitian white sand has an ultra-fine texture, making it a natural and gentle exfoliator. These ingredients combine to create a creamy cleanser for all skin types.

"This scrub is a great option as it works to brighten the skin and eliminates dead skin cells without leaving the skin feeling dry or irritated, making it a great option even for those with sensitive skin," commented Dr. Garshick. “Combining yuzu lemon with sodium ascorbyl phosphate helps to leave the skin glowing.”

The Vitamin C Facial Serum (2 oz) retails for $38.99, the Longevity Eye Cream is $24.99, and the Vitamin C Scrub is $11.99. All three are available on Amazon, www.TruSkin.com, and select TruSkin® retailers.

Note: These products will be on sale on Amazon next month during Prime Day 2024. The Vitamin C Serum will be 46% off, the Longevity Eye Cream will be 35% off, and the Vitamin C Scrub will be 20% off.

Kava Coalition Celebrates Second Edition of Botanical Safety Handbook's Kava Update

The Kava Coalition, a leading advocate for the responsible use and understanding of Kava, celebrates the release on the updated entry for Piper methysticum (kava) root rhizome in the second edition of the American Herbal Products Association’s (AHPA’s) Botanical Safety Handbook (BSH). This update represents a significant milestone in the kava industry, providing the most comprehensive and scientifically backed information on the safety profile of the plant-based botanical.

The Botanical Safety Handbook is renowned as the industry-leading compendium with application for safe use of kava. The updates underwent rigorous review by an Expert Advisory Council of esteemed herbal and integrative medicine experts from the U.S. The inclusion of kava in the handbook underscores the importance of ensuring accurate and reliable information for consumers, practitioners, and manufacturers alike locally and globally.

The Kava Coalition praised the AHPA BSH update as a pivotal step in enhancing understanding of kava's safety profile. With the most up-to-date science as a foundation, it is evident that kava is well-tolerated, whether consumed traditionally or through modern extraction techniques, paving the way for its continued safe use.

"This update reflects the advancements in scientific understanding of kava and dispels misconceptions surrounding its safety,” said Matthew Lowe, Executive Director of The Kava Coalition. “It reaffirms that claims of liver injury from kava are unsubstantiated and underscores the importance of quality control in product manufacturing."

The handbook update delineates between "traditional" kava, typically water-based extracts, and "contemporary" kava products, which utilize organic-based extraction methods. Importantly, it highlights that any association between kava-related liver injury and organic-based extraction methods is tenuous at best, with quality control issues often being the culprit.

Notably, the safety sections were updated to incorporate human clinical trial results demonstrating the rarity of liver injury associated with kava consumption. Additionally, the handbook now recognizes the historical use of kava as a food in the United States prior to 1958, further underscoring its traditional global use and safety profile.

"The Botanical Safety Handbook sets the gold standard for the herbal supplements industry,” said Simon Gellar, PhD, who teaches criminology at the University of Kent. “Its inclusion of kava and comprehensive review process provide consumers and practitioners with reliable information backed by scientific evidence."

Dr. Gellar's research on kava delves into the intricate interplay of cultural norms, economic dynamics, and external drug policies, offering a nuanced perspective on consumption across diverse contexts. Dr. Gellar will publish a major research paper, "Elixir of the South Pacific or Harmful Muddy Water: Examining the Consumption of Kava from a Cross-Cultural Perspective and the Lived Experience of Macro-Level Social Processes", later in 2024.

The Kava Coalition reiterates the importance of responsible consumption and adherence to safety guidelines. The required trade statement from AHPA remains unchanged, urging caution and advising consultation with healthcare professionals before use.

The Kava Coalition encourages its members and other stakeholders across the herbal products industry to utilize the updated information in the BSH to promote safety and transparency in the formulation, recommendation, and use of kava-containing products.

For more information about The Kava Coalition and its advocacy efforts, please visit https://www.kavacoalition.org/.

About the Kava Coalition

The Kava Coalition is dedicated to promoting the responsible use and understanding of kava. Comprising industry professionals, researchers, and advocates, the Coalition strives to uphold the cultural significance and therapeutic potential of kava while advocating for safety and transparency within the herbal products industry.

Tune.FM and Space Blue Partner for Exclusive Release of Rare Compilation from Iconic Music Artists Launched in Lunaprise Time Capsule on the Moon

Tune.FM, a groundbreaking decentralized music streaming platform and unique music NFT marketplace, and Space Blue, the curator of the Lunaprise Museum, which made history as the first art museum to land on the moon on February 22, 2024,  announced plans today to unveil a rare compilation including live performances by some of the world’s most iconic musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Carlos Santana, The Who, Marvin Gaye, Eric Clapton and The Yardbirds, and others. The albums were curated with Lunar Records, a joint venture between Space Blue (manager of Galactic Legacy Lab's official payload launched atop SpaceX Falcon 9 on February 15, 2024), Melody Trust, a subsidiary of Hollywall Entertainment, Inc., and Beverly Hills Productions.

Andrew Antar, founder and CEO of Tune.FM  joined Dallas Santana, founder of Space Blue at Consensus 2024, the world’s most influential event for leaders across the cryptocurrency, blockchain, and Web3 industries to discuss the new partnership and the future of the music streaming platform. There are 26 songs on the two-volume series (13 songs per volume) from some of the world’s most renowned and respected artists in the industry, which landed on the moon in the Lunaprise time capsule. Summer of Love Volumes I and II will drop exclusively on Tune.FM this summer.

Summer of Love Volume I includes a rare song performed by Jimi Hendrix called "Bleeding Heart (Peoples, Peoples, Peoples)", released posthumously in 1971; a 17-minute live performance of "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly; Carlos Santana’s closing song at Woodstock, "Soul Sacrifice"; and Bob Marley’s first collaboration with Lee Perry, "Soul Rebel". Summer of Love Volume II features a live version of Jimi Hendrix’s "Love Love", a 10-minute live version of Marvin Gaye’s "Sexual Healing", and rare, live tracks featuring a 6-minute live version of "Reelin' and Rockin'" by Chuck Berry and James Brown.

Blockchain Funds / Influencers Attend Private Event Hosted by Space Blue to Announce Tune.FM Partnership at Consensus 2024

Space Blue hosted a lakeside luxury retreat during Consensus 2024 where Tune.FM leader Andrew Antar and Space Blue founder Dallas Santana spoke about the intersection of music and space as well as equity and opportunities for music artists. The intimate lakefront event was attended by music legends like Jimi Hendrix and Woodstock band member and drummer, Gerardo Valez; as well as founders of crypto fund DNA Fund; Michael Gord with GDA Capital; Blockstreet Capital; Kenji Claudio with Momentum Media Fund; the former CEO of Cointelegraph; private equity and hedge fund manager Kelvin Ung;  Catalyst Global; Bitbasel founders; Kat Miroshnikova of Unit Network; Brandi Veil and The Coin Republic; NFT leading investor, influencer, and star of the film "The 9th Raider", "CL7"; Kwasi Asare of media group Feedia; space entrepreneur Josh Hanes of Space+; Rock Tree Capital, space innovator and co-founder of Karman Line, Sean Graham; Web3 influencer and TV host Audrie Mikulaco; and a special live stream with Nasdaq studios in New York, which beamed in to announce the arrangement between Tune.FM and Space Blue.

Tune.FM is transforming artist compensation and monetization, positioning itself as one of the world’s most transformational startup technology companies, by seamlessly integrating Hedera Hashgraph blockchain technology, with features including elaborate multimedia NFTs, exclusive super fan experiences and streaming royalty payments, Tune.FM is reshaping the music industry landscape.

When the Music Gets Played, the Artist Gets Paid

Breaking away from the traditional subscription-based and ad-supported models of mainstream streaming services today, Tune.FM is creating a more sustainable ecosystem through decentralization and tokenization (JAM), allowing artists to be compensated significantly and more fairly. In fact, Tune.FM compensates artists by up to 100X compared to other streaming platforms. In addition, artists can sell music, release exclusive NFT drops and multimedia elements directly to fans, and can take advantage of exclusive, immersive super fan experiences including merch bundles, meet and greets, VIP events, backstage passes, FaceTime opportunities with artists, and more. Offering a pay-as-you-go model, Tune.FM gives users the ability to choose what they listen to and pay for only what they consume, and to get compensated for listening to promoted music streams, representing a seismic shift in the music fan experience.

"This partnership with Space Blue further underscores how Tune.FM is creating a paradigm shift in the way music is consumed, distributed, and monetized," said Antar. "Tune.FM’s innovative and disruptive approach features a music streaming platform that offers rare or exclusive content from legacy artists and is a great platform to introduce new and upcoming artists. This approach provides great opportunities for artists to connect with fans and significantly expand monetization opportunities through streaming royalty micropayments and exclusive, unlockable and immersive super fan experiences. This is just the beginning of the type of content we will offer on Tune.FM," said Antar.

Driven by his passion for music and technology, Antar is on a mission to disrupt and democratize the music industry. His visionary approach and the immense potential of Tune.FM’s model and vision have captured the attention of investors as he has secured over $30 million in funding.

"Space Blue’s mission is to create a unique, rare asset class of content off earth through the Lunaprise time capsule, and a platform for artists worldwide, supporting humanity and promoting a sustainable future and today we are thrilled to further propel our mission forward and partner with Tune.FM to bring these unreleased and rare tracks to music lovers and fans worldwide," said Dallas Santana, Space Blue's founder and curator of the Lunaprise Museum which landed on the moon on February 22, 2024. "We have been waiting for the right partner with the right platform and Tune.FM is the perfect match for both us and music fans across the globe.”

Space Blue Club made history curating the Lunaprise Museum, which landed on the moon on February 22, 2024, and is a global space tech-art community, where art and technology collide, providing VIP experiences during high-profile space launch events and hosting global impact and charity auctions to support nonprofit causes, reinforcing their commitment to social responsibility. NFT art has revolutionized the creative landscape as Space Blue Club partners with leading blockchain networks to mint rare NFT artwork for collectors around the globe. Lunar lander Odysseus landed on the moon with the Lunaprise Museum, a time capsule with 222 art projects on board curated by Space Blue. With Mission 1 complete, Lunaprise is curating partnerships with artists and unique brands for Mission 2, scheduled for later this year.

The partnership between Space Blue and Tune.FM is significant as it represents a shift towards a more immersive and interactive music experience. Combining iconic artists' nostalgia with cutting-edge technology, this collaboration aims to redefine how music is consumed and shared in the digital age.

Looking ahead, Space Blue plans to continue exploring innovative ways to connect music enthusiasts with unforgettable experiences that transcend traditional boundaries. By leveraging technology and creativity, the company aims to revolutionize the music industry and create new opportunities for artists and fans alike.

DPH Biologicals Launches Microbial Nutrient Enhancer Designed To Uniformly Cover Bulk Dry Fertilizers

DPH Biologicals, a leading developer and supplier of agricultural biologicals, has launched EnvelixTM Prime, a patented, biological nutrient enhancer designed to uniformly cover bulk dry fertilizer, delivering a robust biological consortium paired with fertilizer in a single application.

“Envelix Prime enables both retailers and growers to seamlessly unlock the value of biologicals on a broader scale,” said Mick Messman, DPH Bio President & CEO. “Just one pound of Envelix Prime evenly covers a ton of dry fertilizer, giving retailers a way to differentiate their fertilizer blends with biology while giving growers a single-purchase, single application route to enhanced performance and an increased return on their fertilizer investment.”

Envelix Prime contains naturally occurring beneficial bacterial and fungal microorganisms designed to accelerate and maximize fertility release using a patented carrier to adhere microorganisms to the fertilizer prill. In a tissue sample taken from a 2023 corn trial at the V3 leaf stage, Envelix Prime increased nutrient uptake of several macro and micronutrients when applied to MESZ fertilizer, including:

  • An 18% increase in phosphorus,
  • A 10% increase in sulfur.
  • A 9% increase in boron.
  • An 8% increase in copper.

Envelix Prime is DPH Bio’s first product to be powered by Prime™, a one-of-a-kind, patented spore priming technology that germinates beneficial bacteria faster, and in harsher conditions, enabling more consistent biological performance. In a recent corn trial, Prime enabled more than 70% of spores to germinate at temperatures as high as 98.6 degrees, while those without Prime germinated less than 10%. Additionally, nearly all spores with Prime germinated in high salt environments, while those that were not treated with Prime did not germinate.

Envelix Prime mixes seamlessly with MAP, DAP & Urea, offering improved flowability and less bridging at application.

“We are excited to get Envelix Prime out on the broad acre this fall enabling many growers the opportunity to experience the benefits of biologicals for the first time. This integrated approach requires no change in practice for the grower and, with the addition of Prime, we are confident that growers will consistently see the benefits this dynamic product unlocks both in the field and to their bottom line,” said Messman.

Envelix Prime is available now to retail partners and fertilizer blending facilities. For more information about DPH Bio’s technology platforms – RegenAphex™ and Prime, as well as DPH Bio’s expanded product portfolio, visit www.dphbio.com.

LeanData Launches Comprehensive Go-to-Market (GTM) Efficiency E-Book

LeanData, the market leader in revenue orchestration and go-to-market solutions, announced the publication of their latest e-book, "The 2024 State of Go-to-Market Efficiency Report." This detailed guide offers valuable insights and strategies for B2B revenue teams striving for operational excellence in an increasingly complex market landscape.

The new e-book, produced in collaboration with Qualified, UserGems, Cognism, Modern Sales Pros, and Welcome, compiles the experiences and priorities of over 200 professionals across various sectors. The report underscores the pressing need for efficiency and innovation in GTM strategies, especially in light of the economic challenges faced by many businesses.

"As B2B companies navigate an increasingly complex and competitive B2B landscape, the insights from the 2024 State of Go-to-Market Efficiency Report are invaluable,” said Evan Liang, CEO and Co-Founder of LeanData. “This report highlights the critical need for revenue teams to adopt opportunity-based selling to drive efficient, predictable growth. In addition, by aligning marketing and sales functions as well as making strategic tech investments, companies will not only overcome the challenges of today's market but also find new opportunities for success. At LeanData, we are committed to supporting organizations with the tools and strategies they need to excel in this dynamic environment."

Key finding and insights include:

  • Prioritizing Efficiency: The report reveals that 33% of companies are prioritizing new tech stack investments to streamline operations and improve efficiency. Additionally, 30% of respondents ranked "accelerating digital transformation" as a top priority, reflecting the need to adapt quickly to market changes.

  • AI and Automation: AI is expected to significantly impact operations, with 60% of respondents using generative AI for targeted content creation. Additionally, AI is taking over some Sales Development Representative (SDR) functions, such as writing and scheduling email outreach, using chatbots for initial prospect information, and scheduling meetings. This automation is helping companies streamline their go-to-market motions and improve efficiency.

  • Marketing and Sales Alignment: Misalignment between sales and marketing teams remains a major hurdle, with 39% of respondents not believing their teams are aligned. The report emphasizes strategies for better integration to ensure cohesive and effective go-to-market motions, enhancing overall efficiency and conversion rates.

Additionally, 25% don’t believe their lead management systems and processes help deliver an ideal customer experience.

  • Opportunity-Based Selling: The transition from lead-based to opportunity-based selling is gaining traction, with 54% using opportunity-based selling focused on buying groups. This approach has shown to increase deal closure rates by up to 25%, highlighting its effectiveness in today’s market.

“The only real path from go-to-market bloat to business efficiency is to know your market, your landscape, and buying group thoroughly. For marketing to drive an organization’s position in their market, marketers must weave together disparate intent signals, truly own pipeline orchestration, and partner with sales for opportunity-based selling,” said Maura Ginty, Fractional CMO at LeanData.

Simplified Clinical Accelerates Towards Zero Data Entry with FHIR Integration

Simplified Clinical, a leading provider of cloud-based electronic data capture (EDC) solutions, is thrilled to unveil the integration of FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) into its flagship platform. This significant enhancement marks a pivotal moment in the company's journey toward revolutionizing clinical trials by eliminating data entry burdens. Building upon the successful deployment of AI-driven text analytics and seamless PowerBI integration, this strategic incorporation of FHIR technology is now available in the application, further solidifying Simplified Clinical's commitment to streamlining and advancing the clinical research process.

FHIR, an interoperability standard developed by Health Level Seven International (HL7), enables seamless data exchange between Simplified Clinical's EDC system and other healthcare IT systems, such as electronic health records (EHRs), clinical decision support systems, and medical devices. By embracing FHIR, Simplified Clinical continues to drive automation and interoperability, reducing manual data entry and enhancing the efficiency of clinical research.

"At Simplified Clinical, we are relentlessly pursuing our goal of Zero Data Entry (ZDE) in clinical trials," said John Schwope, CEO of Simplified Clinical. "By combining our AI-driven text analytics, PowerBI capabilities, and now FHIR interoperability, we are empowering our customers to unlock the full potential of data-driven clinical trials, accelerate research timelines, and ultimately improve patient outcomes."

Simplified Clinical's inclusion of AI-driven text analytics capabilities has already revolutionized data capture by automatically extracting relevant information from unstructured sources, such as medical records and clinical notes. The subsequent integration of PowerBI has empowered customers with advanced data visualization and analytics capabilities, enabling data-driven decision-making throughout the clinical trial lifecycle.

With the addition of FHIR, Simplified Clinical takes another significant stride towards its zero data entry vision by enabling seamless data exchange and interoperability across the clinical research landscape.

Key benefits of FHIR integration include:

  • Reducing Administrative Burden: Offering sites a zero/near zero data entry system, sponsors can attract the best Investigators and sites to participate in their clinical research efforts and reduce administrative burden on health workers (e.g., doctors and nurses).
  • Improved Interoperability: FHIR enables seamless integration and data exchange between the EDC system and other healthcare systems, facilitating better data sharing and care coordination.
  • Standardized Data Formats: FHIR defines standardized data models and resources for representing clinical data, ensuring data consistency and reducing the need for custom data mappings.

  • Improved Data Quality: By adhering to FHIR standards, the EDC system benefits from built-in data validation and integrity checks, leading to higher data quality and reduced errors.
  • Futureproofing: As FHIR continues to gain widespread adoption in the healthcare industry, incorporating it into the EDC system future-proofs the system and ensures compatibility with emerging technologies and regulatory requirements.

Simplified Clinical's FHIR-enabled EDC system is now available for clinical trial sponsors, contract research organizations (CROs), and investigator sites worldwide. For more information, please visit www.simplifiedclinical.com.

Claire Messud: Best known for her acclaimed novel, The Emperor’s Children, Claire Messud will discuss This Strange Eventful History—an immersive, multigenerational story of a French-Algerian family, spanning from 1940 to 2010, a fictionalized story of her own family’s wanderings.

Charan Ranganath: One of the world’s top memory researchers uncovers the hidden role that memory plays in our lives and gives us powerful tools to remember better in Why We Remember.

Attica Locke: Acclaimed American author and screenwriter, known for gripping crime novels that explore themes of racial tension and justice in the American South, joins us to talk about her latest novel, Guide Me Home.

Lottie Hazell: Author of one of the most exciting debuts of the year, English writer Lottie Hazell joins us to talk about her sumptuous novel Piglet and how it deals with literary depictions of food and disordered eating.

Emmeline Clein: Cultural critic and author of the acclaimed, generation-defining Dead Weight: On Hunger, Harm and Disordered Eating, Emmeline Clein will be in conversation with Lottie Hazell.

Catherine Lacey: Acclaimed American novelist known for literary innovation, Biography of X, an instant classic, explores the enigmatic life of a celebrated artist, weaving a playful narrative that blurs the lines between reality and fiction.

“We are delighted to announce this first group of authors that will feature onstage at Dock Street Theatre at this year’s Charleston Literary Festival in November,” said Sarah Moriarty, Executive Director of Charleston Literary Festival. “They reflect the Festival’s commitment to diverse literary excellence and innovation.”

Charleston Literary Festival is celebrating its eighth year of providing a platform for people to come together to embrace the conversation and experience the transformative power of books and ideas. This mission is supported and propped up by strategic partnerships including College of Charleston who are coming onboard as the Festival’s official academic partner again this year.

Two 2024 Pulitzer Prize winners will be in attendance at the Festival in November. Jayne Anne Phillips will discuss her novel Night Watch, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2024 for fiction—a mother-daughter story set in a genteel asylum in West Virginia around the time of the Civil War. Ilyon Woo will discuss her 2024 Pulitzer Prize winning biography Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom on the Craft’s escape from slavery in Georgia to the free states of the North. Woo’s book will be at the centre of the third annual Charleston READS!, a city-wide read-together program launched in 2022, in collaboration with the Charleston Mayor’s Book Club, Charleston Literary Festival, and Oakwood University. The Charleston READS! event is free for the public—previous Charleston READS! authors include Imani Perry in 2022 and Elizabeth Dowling Taylor in 2023.

For the second year running, Charleston Literary Festival is partnering with the International African American Museum on programming. This year’s collaboration sees the Festival and IAAM welcoming literary and cultural icon, poet Nikki Giovanni. The collaboration between Charleston Literary Festival and IAAM shows great alignment between complementary missions illuminating untold stories of the African American experience. A marquee event featuring Nikki Giovanni, whose poetry became the voice of many African Americans in the 1960s and 1970s, is an important opportunity for audiences to share and embrace crucial conversations.

As book bans and the censoring of storytelling are on the rise in South Carolina, Charleston Literary Festival is committed to the free exchange of ideas and facilitating open conversations. This theme is front and centre in James Shapiro’s most recent work, The Playbook: A Story of Theatre, Democracy, and the Making of a Culture War, which tells the story of the emergence of a culture war in the 1930s surrounding the Federal Theatre Project and how it anticipates our current cultural climate.

For readers looking to build their summer reading lists, the Festival has announced two exciting debuts who will be in conversation: English writer, Lottie Hazell, will discuss her delicious novel Piglet with cultural critic, Emmeline Clein, author of the cultural phenomenon book of essays, Dead Weight. Attica Locke, renowned thriller writer, will feature with Guide Me Home—the third instalment in her Highway 59 series about a missing Black girl whose sorority insists is not missing at all.

Themes of identity, exile, and home are present through the work of Claire Messud’s new novel This Strange Eventful History, Marie Arana’s sweeping nonfiction account of the multiplicities of Latino identity drawn from personal stories, and Colm Tóibīn revisits the idea of the Irish/Italian-American immigrant identity and the ineluctable pull towards home in Long Island.

Eddie S. Glaude Jr., Distinguished University Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, returns to Charleston Literary Festival to encourage people to refrain from outsourcing our responsibility for defending democracy. Drawing on the Du Bois Lectures and the rich intellectual and cultural heritage of thinkers like James Baldwin, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Ella Baker, Toni Morrison, and more, Professor Glaude encourages us to look inside ourselves to be the leaders that we need.

“At Charleston Literary Festival, above all, we’re storytellers—at the heart of what we do is a commitment to bringing people together through books and big ideas,” says Sarah Moriarty. “This year, we are leaning into fostering a deep sense of connection and joyful togetherness. Come to Charleston Literary Festival to find community and have an unforgettable time.”

Kava (Piper methysticum) is a plant native to the South Pacific, where it is traditionally used for ceremonial and social, and purposes. Botanic Tonics supports the Kava Coalition’s mission to preserve kava's history and cultural significance, whilst also embracing innovation and the expanded use of kava in the form of product formats that extend beyond traditional preparations. Double Launches Double Pool: An Innovative Delegation Platform Closing the Gap between AI and Experienced Assistants

Double, an innovative tech-enabled remote assistant service for executives, today announced the launch of an open delegation platform, Double Pool. This platform allows anyone to instantly delegate a personal or professional task to a pool of highly skilled assistants. By utilizing proactive AI, Double has made the process of delegating tasks intuitive and accessible to all, while ensuring that tasks are executed with the utmost care and human judgment.

Double's new platform is a game-changer for individuals and businesses alike. By providing access to a pool of talented assistants, Double is allowing users to free up their time and focus on more important tasks without committing to monthly packages. The combination of AI technology and human expertise ensures that tasks are completed with precision and excellence, setting Double apart from other delegation services.

"We are thrilled to introduce Double Pool to the world," said Alice Default, CEO of Double. "While new AI assistants are coming out every day, we wanted our users to be able to actually get all their tasks completed. Our experienced human assistants make sure that the job gets done."

Traditional assistant services, including Double, have been tailored for CEOs and executives, often requiring significant upfront commitments. This model has excluded many busy professionals at different levels who could benefit from high-quality remote assistance but are deterred by cost and complexity. Double Pool democratizes access to skilled assistance, offering a flexible, no-commitment solution that caters to a broader audience. Double Pool is designed for busy parents, mid-level professionals, small business owners, and anyone with an overwhelming to-do list. The platform allows users to delegate tasks such as booking doctor’s appointments, researching childcare options, or handling complex business data entry, all executed by experienced human assistants.

Double Pool’s AI component simplifies the delegation process by guiding users through task definition. For instance, a user requesting “research daycare options” will receive AI-generated follow-up questions to gather necessary context. The AI then creates a detailed delegation brief, outlining objectives, instructions, and scope of work, ensuring the assistant can execute the task efficiently and effectively.

Sol, a Product Manager at Double, explains, “You don’t have to be an executive to feel overwhelmed. Whether you’ve just had a child or are managing unexpected home repairs, Double Pool is here to help. Our assistants bring a human touch, ensuring tasks are handled with care and expertise, unlike AI-only solutions. We’ve supported clients with everything from estate management to travel planning, and we’re excited to make this level of support accessible to more people.”

Dave (32), a small business owner, recounts, “When our event venue canceled last minute, Double Pool saved us. The assistant found three new options in two days, saving us $200.”

Julia (28), an Account Executive at Salesforce, adds, “My assistant planned a perfect two-week road trip, suggesting stops I wouldn’t have considered. It was like having my most organized friend handle everything.”

Double Pool is now open for general access. Users can delegate tasks by visiting https://work.withdouble.com and choosing from popular tasks or submitting their own requests.
