MELBOURNE, FL, August 12, 2026 (EZ Newswire) -- Our members are the only reason we exist. Their support is what’s driven our success over the past 75 years,” says Shane Hoyle, president and CEO of Space Coast Credit Union (SCCU). “We started from very humble roots, and that support has allowed us to grow into the fourth-largest credit union in the state. We work hard every day to bring value to our members’ lives and to continue earning their trust.”

Founded in 1951 to serve personnel at Patrick Air Force Base, SCCU now serves more than 700,000 members from 69 branch locations in Central Florida and along its east coast. The credit union offers members the same products and services they would find at any traditional bank, from checking and savings accounts to home and auto loans. Unlike a bank, however, SCCU is a not-for-profit financial cooperative.

“We’re owned by our members, not shareholders,” says Hoyle. “This means we have different incentives than a bank. Every decision we make is guided by the principle of providing a better experience for our members. Our profits are returned to members in the form of better rates, improved member services, and ongoing support for the communities our members live in. Being a credit union means we’re focused on people over profits.”

Headquartered in Melbourne, SCCU serves communities in 36 Florida counties. Its reach continues to grow, with two new locations in Orlando opening within the last year. The credit union is also steadily expanding its presence in South Florida and deepening connections within the region’s many Hispanic communities.

“Supporting these communities means meeting their needs,” Hoyle says. “Around 80% of our South Florida staff speak Spanish, and we provide bilingual phone support and financial documents to members who need them. We’re also looking toward the future by supporting bilingual financial education initiatives.”

That inclusivity reflects SCCU’s broader mission. Credit unions are for everyone, Hoyle notes, and every community can benefit from a relationship-driven approach.

“We want our members to see us as a long-term financial partner,” he says. “We want them to understand that we are here to serve them, and that every decision we make has their best interests in mind. Their success is our success.”

Connecting Through Community

That focus on relationships starts at the local level. One reason for SCCU’s 75 years of success is the credit union’s locally focused approach. While its overall footprint has grown considerably since 1951, every branch has deep roots in its local community.

“Our members value personal connection,” Hoyle says. “They may do their day-to-day banking online or through our mobile app, but they also want the option to come into their local branch and talk to a real person if they need to. When they call us, they want to know they can always talk to a human being. Meeting our members’ needs means making it easy for them to connect with us.”

As banking habits evolve, SCCU has worked to balance in-person service and digital convenience.

“We know how important it is for members to be able to connect with us on their own terms,” says Hoyle. “We’re always looking for new ways to meet their needs and to improve their experience by combining our traditional values with forward-
thinking innovations.”

That same focus carries into how SCCU designs its products and services with priorities that go beyond the bottom line. Its Hero Loan program, for example, offers discounted financing rates on loans to active-duty service members, first responders, medical professionals, teachers, and other “frontline hometown heroes,” SCCU’s loan approvals are made at the local level by experienced lenders who consider more than just a credit score.

“When a member comes in to talk about a home or vehicle loan, they want to know the decision is being made by people in their community,” Hoyle says. “They come to us because they care about things like trust and integrity, and they value personalized service. Getting those things right drives every decision we make. The relationship is what matters most to us, not the transaction.”

Investing in Local Business

SCCU’s relationship-driven approach extends to small and local businesses. These businesses often struggle to get loans from large banks, making it difficult for them to access the financial resources they need to grow.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our communities,” says Hoyle. “That makes them a natural fit for how we do business, and we try to support them however we can.”

In addition to standard business banking products like checking accounts and flexible loans, SCCU also provides payroll, payment processing, and other merchant services through vendor partnerships. One of the most valuable services SCCU provides, however, is access to expertise.

“We have a team of highly skilled business advisors, and we make them available to our business customers free of charge,” Hoyle explains. “Our advisors understand the local market and the needs of a growing business. They are ready to help these businesses become more successful, regardless of their current size.”

Guided By Purpose

Service has always been central to SCCU’s mission, guiding how it uses its resources and reach to support local charities and community projects. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, the credit union is expanding this support through its 75 Acts of Purpose initiative.

“The idea behind 75 Acts of Purpose is to empower our local branches to lead an act of service in their own community,” Hoyle says. “This can be anything from participating in local beach cleanups to volunteering at local food pantries. It’s a year-long program that allows us to directly participate in the community projects our members care about.”

The project is an extension of SCCU’s Partners in Purpose program, which is designed to unite the credit union’s many charitable giving, volunteer, and nonprofit partnership initiatives. The program reflects SCCU’s ongoing commitment to service, stewardship, and the communities it calls home.

“Participating in these local projects has been very rewarding for us,” Hoyle says. “We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from our members, and our team members love it. It’s a great reminder of what the credit union movement is all about. We’re people helping people.”
