The owner of The JR Baker Group is recognized for 50 years in financial and estate planning and a client philosophy built on true wealth.

BUELLTON, CA, November 5, 2026 (EZ Newswire) -- Joel Baker, owner of The JR Baker Group, has been honored by Marquis Who’s Who for expertise in wealth optimization and legacy planning. Mr. Baker has built a five-decade career in financial and estate planning, leading The JR Baker Group and guiding clients to define true wealth across human, intellectual, social and financial assets.
He is also a former U.S. ski team member and professional polo player who coached the U.S. team for the International Cup on three occasions.
Redefining Wealth for Clients
Mr. Baker has worked in financial and estate planning for five decades and has owned The JR Baker Group since 1982. His practice centers on a view of true wealth that extends beyond money. He teaches clients that wealth rests on four asset groups: human, intellectual, social and financial. When he asks which one clients would leave behind, most choose financial assets, since those can be rebuilt. That exercise shows why he considers financial assets the least important of the four.
Much of Mr. Baker’s work involves helping families write a family philosophy plan that defines their dreams and the future they envision for their children. Mr. Baker says he set out three decades ago to break the familiar cycle in which fortunes rise and disappear within three generations. He wants clients to build lasting wealth as their families grow.
A Career Built on Needs-Based Planning
Mr. Baker began his career at Great-West Life Assurance Company in Winnipeg, Canada, working with large group clients such as McDonnell Douglas Aircraft. He later co-owned Baker Hench Balanced Financial Planning, which pioneered fee-based, needs-based planning when financial professionals typically sold life insurance or stocks.
After four years, he moved to Santa Barbara, home to the polo fields, and became fully independent as The JR Baker Group. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in business from Fort Lewis College in 1968.
From the Slopes to the Polo Field
Mr. Baker was selected for the U.S. ski team in 1968 and played professional polo from 1972 to 2010 while building his practice. He has belonged to the United States Polo Association since 1963 and coached the U.S. team for the International Cup in 2013, 2016 and 2021.
He counts ski legend Dave McCoy, who built Mammoth Mountain from rope tows into one of the world's largest ski areas, among his greatest mentors. He says watching McCoy pursue his passion shaped how he helps clients articulate their own aspirations.
Living the Dream
As a young boy, Mr. Baker walked horses at Will Rogers State Historic Park and dreamed of the life he leads today. He considers living that dream his greatest accomplishment. He credits his early success to fortunate mentors and stable parents who valued hard work, skiing and summers camping in the Sierra Nevada despite modest means.
Mr. Baker begins each day with gratitude and describes himself as compassionate about life and the people around him. He enjoys raising polo ponies and playing tennis. He has been married for 35 years to Charlotte Bredahl, a bronze medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. The couple has mentored about 10 children over the years.
Looking Ahead
Over the next five to 10 years, Mr. Baker plans to continue his current work and pursue a nationwide foster program, beginning in his home county. He notes that roughly 1,000 foster children need placement locally, yet only about 100 families have applied or been approved to foster. His vision is a residential facility modeled after a private school, with one therapist for every four or five children.
