A new tuition-free online public charter school, Trailhead Virtual Academy, is launching to serve students across Idaho, with enrollment now open for the 2026-2027 school year.

Serving students in kindergarten through 8th grade, Trailhead Virtual Academy is designed to provide a strong academic foundation while introducing students to real-world learning and early career awareness. While launching this coming school year as a K-8 school, Trailhead Virtual Academy will open to Grades 9-10 in 2027 and to Grades 11-12 in 2028.

With a focus on building both academic skills and confidence, the school combines structured online instruction with hands-on, relevant learning experiences that connect to Idaho communities and industries.

“We created Trailhead Virtual Academy to give Idaho families a different kind of option, one that combines strong academics with learning that feels meaningful from an early age,” said Sonja Howerton, School Board President and founder of Trailhead Virtual Academy. “When students can see how what they’re learning connects to the real world, they’re more engaged, more confident, and better prepared for what comes next.”

“There is growing demand across Idaho for flexible learning options that still maintain high expectations,” Howerton added. “Trailhead was designed to meet that need by giving families access to a structured, supportive online environment that helps students build both academic skills and real-world readiness from the very beginning.”

A New Approach to Early Learning

Trailhead Virtual Academy is designed to support students during critical early learning years while helping them begin to understand how their education connects to future opportunities.

Students benefit from:

  • A strong start for future success: Trailhead serves K-8 students with a focus on building academic skills, confidence, and readiness for what comes next.
  • Early career awareness built into learning: Students begin exploring careers through hands-on activities and real-world connections starting in elementary school.
  • Real-world learning that feels relevant: Lessons connect to Idaho industries and communities so students see how school applies to real life.
  • Skills that go beyond academics: Students develop communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and responsibility every day.
  • A flexible, supportive online environment: Students learn from certified teachers in a structured virtual setting designed to help them stay engaged and grow.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online School

How does online school differ from attending a traditional school building?

Online schools follow the same academic standards, curriculum, and graduation requirements as traditional public schools. The key difference is that instruction and coursework are delivered online, allowing students greater flexibility in when and where they learn.

Why do some families choose online learning?

Many families are drawn to online education because of its flexibility, individualized learning experience, supportive setting, and added sense of safety. It can be especially beneficial for students who thrive at a different pace or need a schedule that better aligns with their daily lives.

How can parents support their child’s success in online school?

Parents play an important role by helping establish routines, celebrating effort and achievements, staying involved through the learning platform, and maintaining communication with teachers when needed.

What helps students stay engaged in an online learning environment

Engagement is often supported through consistent schedules, clear expectations, regular check-ins, and positive encouragement. When students feel supported and can see their progress, their motivation tends to grow.

What do students need in order to participate in online school?

Most families will need a dependable internet connection, a computer, and a quiet space for learning. In some cases, schools may offer laptops to eligible families, so it’s a good idea to check with the school directly.

Will my child have opportunities to interact with other students?

Yes. Online schools promote social interaction through live virtual classes, collaborative group work, student clubs, and other activities that foster connection and social growth.

Is it possible for students to transition to another school later on?

Because online schools align with state academic standards, students typically stay on track academically. If a family’s situation changes, school staff can help guide and support a smooth transition.
