Longtime board chairman recognized for preserving independent, physician-led medicine in Indiana while advancing a philosophy of financial independence paired with a responsible mission.

ELKHART, IN, September 16, 2026 (EZ Newswire) -- William Paul Buckley, equity owner and chairman of the board at Elkhart Clinic, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who for his work in the healthcare industry. Elkhart Clinic is the last physician-owned multispecialty clinic in Indiana.
The recognition highlights Dr. Buckley's more than two decades of clinical and organizational leadership, along with his continued commitment to mentoring the next generation of internists.
Advancing Independent, Patient-Centered Medicine
Since 2024, Dr. Buckley has served as a physician with Privia Health in Elkhart, Indiana, an organization that provides health systems and employers with physician groups and population health management programs.
Dr. Buckley has been a member and equity owner of Elkhart Clinic since 2001. His peers elected him to serve as chairman of the board, a role he held for 12 years across six consecutive terms before stepping down to make room for new leadership.
Three years later, Dr. Buckley was reelected following his successor's departure. Under his stewardship, Elkhart Clinic has maintained its independence at a time when private equity firms or larger health systems have acquired most comparable practices in the state.
Dr. Buckley also served as chief of staff at Elkhart Hospital for two years. Earlier, he worked as a hospitalist at Pekin Hospital in Illinois and a general internist at Laporte Hospital in Indiana.
FIRM: A Physician's Alternative to FIRE
Dr. Buckley's approach to his career reflects a philosophy he describes as FIRM (Financial Independence, Responsible Mission), which he distinguishes from the FIRE movement, or Financial Independence, Retire Early, popular among professionals in recent years. While FIRE treats financial independence as a path to stepping away from work, FIRM treats it as a transition into continued professional and personal responsibility.
Under this philosophy, financial independence gives physicians the freedom to choose how they keep contributing, not the freedom to stop. For Dr. Buckley, that has meant staying engaged at Elkhart Clinic, mentoring younger partners and leading through periods of change rather than stepping back once his own goals were achieved.
Dr. Buckley views the approach as especially relevant given the burnout and workforce pressures facing healthcare today, noting that experienced physicians often bring judgment and institutional knowledge most valuable later in a career.
Professional Involvement and Education
Dr. Buckley is active in the Indiana State Medical Association and has served as president of both the District 13 Medical Society and the Elkhart Medical Society.
Dr. Buckley earned a Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1992, following a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and biology from Valparaiso University in 1988. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis in 1995 and had a one-year appointment as chief resident of internal medicine at Methodist Hospital.
In 2026, Dr. Buckley completed Privia Health's Clinical Leadership Program, a selective national initiative admitting only 24 participants annually. He has been recognized as a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Preserving Independent Medicine for the Next Generation
As he continues his work at Elkhart Clinic and Privia Health, Dr. Buckley remains focused on mentoring younger partners and preserving independent, physician-led medicine throughout Indiana.
