Retired Army Colonel James Lillard Wilmeth III Recognized by Marquis Who’s Who for Military Career

NEW YORK, NY, August 4, 2026 (EZ Newswire) -- Retired U.S. Army Col. James Lillard Wilmeth III has been recognized with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who’s Who. The award highlights his nearly three-decade career in military leadership and work in defense operations research. Over the course of his service and post-military career, Col. Wilmeth contributed to artillery training, strategic analysis and defense programs supporting the Joint Chiefs of Staff and major military commands.

A Career of Military Leadership

Col. Wilmeth built a career marked by service, discipline and dedication. His path began at the University of Dayton, where he joined the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. Although military service was not a family tradition in his immediate household, his college experience introduced him to the structure and purpose of Army life. He excelled in ROTC and finished first among cadets at a major summer training camp, which led to his selection as cadet leader of the university’s large ROTC corps.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in business administration in 1965, Col. Wilmeth was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Over the next 27 years, he served in major artillery and leadership assignments in Vietnam, South Korea, Germany and at key Army bases in the United States. His early service included duty in South Vietnam, where he supported the 3rd U.S. Marine Division and later served as aide-de-camp to the commanding general of the 1st Field Force Artillery.

As his career advanced, Col. Wilmeth took on command and staff positions of increasing responsibility. He was also recognized as a top gunnery instructor at the U.S. Army Field Artillery School in 1968 and contributed to the Army’s “Field Manual 6-30” on cannon gunnery. Later assignments included service with the U.S. Army Center for Army Analysis and his final Army post as deputy chief of staff for the U.S. Army Recruiting Command, from which he retired as a colonel in 1992.

Continued Service Through Defense Research

Following his military career, Col. Wilmeth continued to serve through research and analysis work with government contracting organizations. From 1998 to 2009, he worked as a research analyst and program manager for the Joint Analytical Support Program through organizations including Logistics Management Institute, Logicon, SAIC and Northrop Grumman. In these roles, he provided analytical support to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and major military commands worldwide. His work contributed to the development of safer and more effective weapon systems.

Col. Wilmeth also built a strong academic foundation throughout his career. He earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Toledo in 1973 and later completed studies at the U.S. Armed Forces Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. He also served as an associate professor of military science and as a graduate student teacher during his time at the University of Toledo.

A Life Guided by Faith, Family and Service

Col. Wilmeth credits much of his success to faith, dedication and the support of family and friends. Above all, he takes great pride in his family and in a life built around service. He values the friendships he formed during his years in uniform and hopes his legacy offers something useful to others.

Now fully retired in northern Virginia, Col. Wilmeth supports many charitable causes, including veterans’ organizations, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the American Red Cross.
