The collaborative event is being sponsored by the San Rafael Elks to benefit local charities including the Huckleberry Youth Programs, the Buckelew Programs' accredited Suicide Prevention Program, The Spahr Center, and Wellify Teen, which are all actively working together to bridge this gap and provide those in need with professional resources and support through greater awareness and peer-to-peer activism.

According to mortality data from the CDC and the Population Reference Bureau (PRB)’s, suicide is the second leading cause of death today for people between 10 and 34 years of age, with one of every six U.S. youths aged 6 to 17 experiencing a mental health disorder each year. In addition, 1.8 million LGBTQ youth in the U.S. between the ages of 13 and 24 seriously consider suicide each year, with at least one suicide attempt occurring or being reported every 45 seconds.

SHINE founders, Rosina and Greg Rorvik, lost their 14-year old son to suicide in February of 2021. ”Bringing awareness without the stigma and shame is a movement, '' said Rosina. “Too many teens wear a mask and struggle in silence, especially during the pandemic lockdowns. The aftermath of grief and unanswered questions is also an unspoken crisis that devastates families and needs attention. Parents need effective channels to successfully communicate with their child as they deal with social pressures while navigating the unpredictable world of social media, which itself can be a lonely plight.”

The SHINE outdoor event on September 25th will be held from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Elks Maple Lawn Estate, located at 1312 Mission Avenue in San Rafael.

A variety of activities and presenters include phenomenal live music performances by the Unauthorized Rolling Stones, Johnny Vegas & The High Rollers, Susan Z & Friends, St0ry, Til Dawn, performance art Hip Hop by Roco Dance Story, and comedy by special guest Michael Prichard, famously known for inspirational talks with teens.

Registration for the event is free to children 15 and under. Admission is $20 for those 16 and older. Food and drink will be for sale at the event.
