The Museum is thrilled to present the 2022 Louis Auchincloss Prize to Anna Deavere Smith in honor of her contributions to New York City’s cultural and performing arts landscape. Anna’s impactful work as an actor, playwright, author, professor, and activist encompasses precisely what the Louis Auchincloss Prize seeks to salute each. Glenn D. Lowry, the David Rockefeller Director of the Museum of Modern Art, will present the award to Ms. Smith; the evening will include a cocktail reception and discussion with Kate D. Levin, principal at Bloomberg Associates.
Special Winter Holiday Installation

Public Programs
The Activist's Media Handbook with David Fenton and Jamal Joseph
Wednesday, November 2, 2022, 6:30 p.m.
Tickets: $15
Format: In-person
On the eve of the November midterm elections, join us for a conversation with two lifelong activists and native New Yorkers about the power and limits of activism today. Progressive PR leader David Fenton and filmmaker, professor, and former Black Panther Jamal Joseph will explore how activists past and present have confronted topics such as the rising specter of authoritarianism and longstanding voting rights efforts, economic and social injustice, violence and war, and the rapid destruction of our planet due to global warming — and what the relationship is between activism and electoral politics. How can we draw on the lessons of grassroots activism over the last 50 years to tackle the enormous challenges of our time? What are the tools activists can draw on, from film and communications strategies to other tactics, in order to win major victories for truth, freedom, democracy, the people, and the planet?
This conversation will draw on Fenton’s new book The Activist’s Media Handbook: Lessons from Fifty Years as a Progressive Agitator (November 1, 2022 / Earth Aware Editions). The book delves into some of the most important and history-making PR campaigns of the last 50 years, from the No-Nukes concerts and the campaigns to free Nelson Mandela and end apartheid, to banning fracking in New York and alerting the public to the climate crisis.

Moonlight & Movies | The Automat
Wednesday, November 9, 2022, 6:00 p.m.
Tickets: $15
Format: In-person
Join us for a screening of The Automat (Lisa Hurwitz, 2021), the award-winning documentary that recounts the lost history of the iconic restaurant chain Horn & Hardart, which served affordable-priced quality food to millions of New Yorkers and Philadelphians for more than a century. Horn & Hardart’s technology captured the public’s imagination like nothing else in the 1900s—the customer put nickels into slots and little windows opened to reveal the customer’s pick, be it a slice of pie, macaroni and cheese, or a Salisbury steak. The gleaming glass and stainless-steel windows looked “sanitary” and like nothing else in existence. Featuring appearances by Mel Brooks and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, The Automat illustrates how the company both served the public with great food and at the same time treated its employees with fairness and integrity. The film's director, Lisa Hurwitz, will introduce the screening.

Halal and the City — Part of our “Eat Your Heart Out” series, co-presented with the Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD)
Thursday, November 17, 6:30 p.m.
Tickets: $40
Format: In-person
Where does halal food fit into the context of New York City dining? And how do issues of religion, class, and bureaucracy impact the halal food that’s available and who is able to sell it?
In an evening led by Krishnendu Ray, author of The Migrant’s Table and The Ethnic Restaurateur, we’ll learn the answers to questions such as these and more as we hear from a New York City halal food street vendor, and Mohamed Attia, director of the Street Vendor Project. Additionally, we’ll go beyond the street cart with Sameen Choudhry of Muslim Foodies, an NYC halal restaurant blog run by three women who are seeking to bridge the gap between mainstream restaurants and halal restaurants.
After the discussion, we’ll taste halal chicken over rice and falafel over rice, two of the classic halal dishes you’ll find sold by New York City’s halal food street vending community.
Education and Family Programs
Election Day PD: We Are What We Eat – Food and Culture in NYC
Tuesday, November 8, 2022, 9:00 a.m.
Tickets: Free with advance registration required
Format: In-person
From family meals to reunions and holidays, food is often at the center of New Yorkers’ most important life events. But how does the food we eat get to our plates? And who gets it there?
Join us for a nourishing full-day workshop for educators as we celebrate autumn by examining the history of New York city’s rich food traditions, learning about the people behind the city’s complex networks of food distribution, and discussing the current efforts to find solutions for more equitable access to food. Discover our newest interactive exhibition, Food in New York: Bigger Than the Plate, and gain a deeper understanding of the environmental impact of our food choices and how activists are developing solutions to meet the challenges in our food systems.
This day will include engaging guided tours of the Museum’s galleries, guest speakers, and hands-on workshops. We will learn more about food and labor in the history of New York and how to bring an understanding of how we get what we eat back to your classroom. Be ready to whet your learner’s appetite! The Museum is CTLE-certified. Participation in this program provides 5 hours of CTLE credit.

Inspired by the ingenuity of the tricks and traps Kevin comes up with to stop the Stick Bandits, we will also host STEAM workshops and activities to be announced. Exhibitions on View
City of Faith: Religion, Activism, and Urban Space – OPENING NOVEMBER 18
City of Faith: Religion, Activism, and Urban Space looks under the surface of New York’s image as a secular city and maps the complex and often surprising relationships that connect religion to public space. The exhibition focuses our attention on how religion engages the city at a public level—in “secular” streets and sidewalks, waterfronts, and other liminal spaces. Focusing on South Asian-American and other communities who have faced religious profiling and surveillance—particularly after 9/11—the exhibition critically examines the nature of secularism in the city, how it has historically favored Protestantism while rendering other communities hyper-visible, and how these latter communities assert their right to the city through transformative art and collective action.

Food In New York: Bigger Than the Plate – JUST OPENED
Food is a powerful social network binding New Yorkers to each other and countless others across the globe. The city's raucous restaurant scene; its ubiquitous street food; the current activist efforts to source food locally; the world's largest food market in Hunts Point; and the artists, thinkers, and designers who are imagining new sustainable ways to relate to food are all a part of Food in New York: Bigger Than the Plate. First developed at London's Victoria and Albert Museum and now adapted and updated to look at eating and food systems in the Big Apple, the exhibition is an invitation to feast for a more equitable and exciting future.

Analog City: NYC B.C. (Before Computers) – CLOSING DECEMBER 31
Analog City: NYC B.C. (Before Computers) will uncover the array of tools, technologies, and lost professions that supported New York City as it exploded into a global metropolis in the pre-digital era. Focusing on the period between the 1870s and the 1970s, Analog City will examine the technologies that enabled the city to reach its position as the “capital of the world” in an age before the speed and capacity of today’s digital technologies. Set against a contemporary backdrop of 24-hour news cycles and high-speed trading—in which questions about privacy, truth, and the impact of social media are increasingly pressing—the exhibition will uncover this bygone era of paper files and pneumatic tubes, of note cards and telephone directories, and examine how New York thrived as a center of finance, news, research, and real estate in an era before personal computers and the internet.

Celebrating the City: Recent Photography Acquisitions from the Joy of Giving Something
Celebrating the City highlights a gift that has dramatically advanced the Museum’s already stellar photography collection. Juxtaposing striking recent images with work by some of the 20th century’s most important photographers, including the Museum’s first images by Robert Frank and William Klein, the exhibition is a moving celebration of the power of photography to capture New York and New Yorkers.

Raise Your Voice: An Art Installation by Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya
Raise Your Voice is an immersive installation by Brooklyn-based artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya. The project mixes selections from the public art campaign “We Are More,” which depicted the resiliency of New York’s Asian American and Pacific Islander community, with original artwork of activists and allies Yuri Kochiyama and Malcolm X. Installed adjacent to the ongoing exhibition, Activist New York, Raise Your Voice poses a series of questions and invites audiences to engage their own powers of advocacy and activism.

Activist New York
In a town renowned for its in-your-face persona, New Yorkers have banded together on issues as diverse as civil rights, wages, sexual orientation, and religious freedom. Now featuring a new section on the Chinese Hand Laundry Alliance.

New York at Its Core
This exhibition captures the human energy that drove New York to become a city like no other, featuring the city’s “big personalities”—among them, Lenape Sachem Penhawitz, Alexander Hamilton, Elizabeth Jennings Graham, Walt Whitman, Emma Goldman, JP Morgan, Fiorello La Guardia, Jane Jacobs, and Jay-Z. Through almost 450 historic objects and images, many from the Museum’s rich collection, as well as contemporary video, photography, and interactive digital experiences, we welcome you to dive deep into the city’s past and create your own visions for its future.

Re-Treat Launches as Premium CBD Wellness Line Aimed at Burnt-Out Moms
Re-Treat, a woman-of-color-owned company, today announced the launch of a premium CBD wellness line to support maternal mental health and wellness. Every product is THC-free, third-party tested for safety and purity, all natural, vegan, organic, cruelty-free, and gluten-free. Re-Treat's edibles and topicals are stronger than most others, offering "mom-sized strength for mom-sized stress." Customers can use the code "ReTreatYoself20" for 20% off their purchase.
"70% of mothers say that the worry and stress from the pandemic have damaged their health," said founder Lucy Keoni. "Now as we emerge from the aftermath of Covid-19, the pressure mounts from every direction, moms are running a million miles an hour, often putting the needs of everyone else before themselves. CBD products may be just what they need to restore balance in their lives."
Keoni knows a thing or two about mom-sized stress. She is a global innovation strategist, entrepreneur, advisor, speaker, and writer. She is one of the youngest professionals to be named among Silicon Valley Business Journal’s “Top 40 under 40” list, spearheading investments, initiatives, and mentorship underrepresented, under-served populations. But most importantly, she is a dedicated single mother, divorced right before the pandemic struck, while her son was just one-year-old.
She had been doing it all alone until hitting a wall and burning out. Keoni suffered from postpartum depression while struggling with a lack of sleep, having to go back to work at only 12 weeks after delivery, and dealing with a crumbling marriage. Having gotten Covid twice and still recovering from long haul symptoms, Keoni has re-evaluated her priorities, immersed herself in self-care practices, and has been on a mission to help moms cope with mommyhood stress while taking care of themselves so they can begin to heal deeply.
“After a number of years on anxiety and depression medications, I wanted to find a natural solution to finding balance and calm, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic," Keoni explained. "I discovered the healing power of CBD in my mind, body, and spirit. From that moment on, I have been on a mission to provide premium CBD wellness products to burnt-out moms on their journey back to feeling whole again.”

More Publishing Launches 'Amos the Amazing,' a New Solarpunk Fantasy Novel
Amos the Amazing is being released in English, in boutique format, in ebook and paperback by new imprint More Publishing. More Publishing is an American-Canadian collaboration dedicated to 'developing and promoting English voices in China.' It will be released on all major platforms on October 31, 2022.
This release will share Amos The Amazing in its native language to the English-speaking world prior to the commercial Chinese release slated for 2023 by Chongqing Publishing Group, the publishing giant that brought the world The Three Body Problem, the largest Chinese Sci-Fi sensation since the Qing dynasty that George R.R. Martin called “A breakthrough book . . . a unique blend of scientific and philosophical speculation.”
Amos The Amazing is "a modern Solarpunk fairytale, just in time to help avert an apocalypse of apoplectic apathy," and will be available in eBook and paperback, with hardcover and audiobooks editions slated for the winter holidays.
What happens when you take an almost-famous D&D dungeon master, with a history of headlining major music festivals and breathing fire in the circus, and send him to a mountain in China to sit alone with his own thoughts? A new epic solarpunk fantasy novel, somewhere between "Chinese Harry Potter" and "an especially psychedelic Alice in Wonderland."
"Amos the Amazing is different from the stories I have seen before. It makes me feel the unique charm of a new narrative story that blends Eastern and Western cultures in a mysterious world of whimsy full of wild imagination and unforgettable characters, and I believe that children will love it." - 停云 Xiao Hua Hua, Senior MG/YA Editor, Chongqing Publishing Group, Publisher of Massive Sci-Fi Bestseller The Three-Body Problem.
From the author of a tweet that Mark Hamill liked comes a book which R.A. Salvatore wished "Congratulations" on finishing & Brandon Sanderson sent his "deep apologies for being unable to provide a jacket quote at this time because his work schedule is busier than ever, making it extremely difficult to find the time he would want to dedicate to your book," comes a modern solarpunk fairytale, just in time to help avert an apocalypse of apoplectic apathy. More Publishing announced it is launching Amos the Amazing (a new Solarpunk fantasy novel), a novel aimed at book lovers around the world looking for a healthy dose of optimism in their fantasy.
In 2038, in the SOLARPUNK futuristic city of Chongqing, a story gets told that sets off a chain reaction that threatens our world and the entire multiverse. This is the story of that story.
The world’s spiciest ice cream, a trip to Chongqing’s rural countryside, & a strange collection of curious belongings begin this unforgettable tale that mixes solarpunk science fiction and high fantasy for a thrilling modern fairytale about a boy who must risk his soul to chase a 9-tail fox into the dreamlands for the adventure of a lifetime and the chance to save his family.
A new solarpunk novel couldn't come at a better time. SOLARPUNK literature envisions how the future will look when we succeed in solving major contemporary challenges by focusing on sustainability, a harmonious relationship between humans and the natural world, tackling and solving issues of climate change and pollution with green solutions, and community-driven efforts. Punk is a rebel’s cause, and what could be more rebellious in 2022 than being optimistic?
“Amos the Amazing is a bedazzling and delightful adventure through a world of wonderment and imagination. The world Jorah Kai has created is full of colorful characters, layered historical depth, and cultural splendor; it rivals Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter in complexity and creativity while maintaining specificity and believability—a recipe for pure literary amazement! This book is a wordsmith’s wonderland, a poet’s playground, and a linguist’s luxury cruise liner that weaves a love for everything Chongqing into a tale that is sure to become an international classic. I already can’t wait to read the next installment in the series. Keep them coming, Jorah Kai!,” said Garrett H Jones, Editor and Publisher of Amos the Amazing.

GenWEL United Launches Harvest Fest 2022
GenWEL United, an IRS tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, announced today that it will host GenWel United Flint Harvest Fest 2022. The food giveaway will take place on November 5, 2022, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., or while food is available, at Hallwood Plaza, 4813 Clio Road, in Flint, Michigan.
GenWEL United is purchasing food from the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan to distribute food to the community in preparation for the holiday season. The event is sponsored by The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Flint and the CRIM, Flint Community Education Initiative.
GenWEL United’s mission is to create an equitable environment through knowledge, resources, and opportunity. “Our goal of Harvest Fest 2022 is to provide food to families for a traditional holiday meal, who would not normally be able to afford one," said Edward Johnson, the founder and chairman of GenWel United. "Last year, we distributed food to over 200 families before the holiday season. We hope to double the number of families we help this year."
According to UnitedWayGenesee.org, 60% of Black households in Michigan were unable to afford basic household essentials in their communities in 2019. In 2020, the median household income was $30,383, according to Data USA. This is a direct effect of public divestment in Flint. In addition, the residents of Flint have trouble accessing quality, nutritious food. This is a direct result of the lack of grocery stores in the community and the lack of fresh produce and wholesome food offerings at affordable prices. Therefore, GenWel United wants to help the people of Flint.
Volunteers, sponsorships, and donations are needed. To make an impact in the community or for other inquiries, please contact GenWel United at inquiry@genwelunited.org or at (866)436-9351.

Throughout its history, WIA has proved to be adaptable and creative in its ongoing work to change outdated concepts and attitudes about women as professional artists.

Perpetuum Designs Reigns Victorious in the 2022 MUSE Design Awards: Season 2
The full list of Season 2 winners for the 2022 MUSE Creative and Design Awards has been officially announced by the International Awards Associate (IAA), marking the end of the 2022 competition. With well over 6,000 entries received from across the world, the MUSE Creative Awards and MUSE Design Awards resumed their mission to honor creative and design professionals’ excellence.
For this competitive season, Perpetuum Designs walks away with the Silver award in the competition. The winning work that seized the win was created by Perpetuum Designs founder Cristiana Crin for the Summer Ideology outdoor space.
“There were so many talented professionals in this category, from all over the world," said Crin. "It is an honor to have our project stand among the winners.”
The MUSE Awards is a series of competitions hosted by the International Awards Associate (IAA), an organization that has continuously strived to honor creatives and designers for their excellence, regardless of their background or experience in the field.
“The IAA team was caught off-guard by the work submitted for the second season of 2022’s MUSE Awards. These entries were truly astounding, and they certainly bring the level of competition up a notch,” Thomas Brandt, spokesperson of IAA, noted. “It’s amazing as always to witness great works lined up in the competition. The team is absolutely in awe of the level of creativity and ingenuity that is in the industry.”
By inviting industry professionals to serve as the competition’s jury, IAA upheld their standards of impartiality and enforced industry standards as their assessment criteria. The jurors’ mission was to identify excellence and burgeoning talent amidst the myriad of entries submitted, which would serve as new benchmarks in their respective industries.
Grand Jury Panel Applications were received from as many as 38 countries, but ultimately, only 110 jurors were selected. These esteemed individuals are professionals belonging to renowned companies, representing the industry’s best of the best, such as Founder and Creative Director of RCBD - Ralph Christian Bremenkamp, CEO of Paolo Cappello Design Studio - Paolo Cappello, Design Manager at Lavazza - Florian Seidl, Creative Director of Kre8ive Partners - Mark Turner, 3D Senior Global Packaging Designer at Tom Ford Beauty - Jiaru Lin, Founder of CHAMPARTE - Catherine Yu, Director at DesignAware - Takbir Fatima, Founder / CCO of Cutwater - Chuck McBride, Founder / CEO of Genome - Matthew Fitz-Henry, Chief Creative Officer at White Rabbit Budapest - Levente Kovacs, Founder of AdvAge Advertising & NFT Cube Agency - Maria Afroditi Patsi, Managing Partner at Coley Porter Bell - Jenn Szekely, Marketing Manager & Account Executive at M&A Creative Agency - Carla Neves, and more.
Each entry was judged using category-relevant industry standards. Blind judging was also employed to enforce impartiality. Under this approach, entries were evaluated on their own without comparison to others. These measures were in place as IAA believes that all works that gain recognition should do so based on their own merits.
Participation of International Brands
As the world’s gaze turned towards the competitions, the MUSE Creative and Design Awards received entries with names of prominent organizations from all over the world. Some entries were submitted directly by the organizations themselves, whereas some were submitted by entrants who represented them instead. Direct submissions saw familiar names such as DAVID CHANG DESIGN ASSOCIATES INT'L LTD., Prompt Design, Licht Kunst Licht AG, Thinc Design, António Fernandez Architects, Dong Lin Interior Design Construction, Prand, The Ritz-Carlton, W Hotels, Clarks Originals, Duncan Channon, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, and Huawei / Aspiegel; whereas indirect submissions included Crunchyroll, Empire State Realty Trust, Doi Chaang Coffee Original Co., Ltd., Super Muffato Gourmet Champagnat, AP (Thailand) Public Company Limited, Toyota Motor North America, SKODA AUTO, Clinique, DHL, Disney, and Oxford Nanopore Technologies.
“It’s a relief to see things get better after two grueling years of uncertainty, especially now that things are visibly improving,” Thomas noted. “The creative and design industries are certainly blessed with devoted practitioners. We are proud to be a platform for these individuals to showcase their talents and works. We can’t wait to see what else they will be bringing to the table in the future.”
