The William J. von Liebig Foundation is currently receiving applications for the second annual von Liebig Prize. The $25,000 prize is awarded annually to individual(s) in the United States for significant accomplishments in animal welfare, such as care for mistreated companion animals and protection from abuse. Full details on how to nominate or submit an application can be found on the Foundation website and must be completed by November 18th, 2022.
The prize aims to support individuals facilitating meaningful change in their community by making a significant impact through improving the lives of disadvantaged animals or having a vision for cultivating solutions to enhance animal well-being.
Last year’s winner, Leslie Granger, CEO of Bideawee, a New York based non-profit with locations in Manhattan, Wantagh, and Westhampton, has shown a deep and abiding interest in improving the lives of homeless animals in her personal and professional capacities.
Granger donated her $25,000 grant to fund a campaign to build a new building for Bideawee and support the organization in a financially meaningful way that she wasn’t able to do before. The Our Authors Study Club, Inc. Los Angeles (OASC) announced today the launch of its 2023 Membership Campaign. With the theme, “Preserving Our Future Past”, OASC hopes to add to the membership a younger generation in preparation for organizational transition and institutional fluidity; preparing for the future, but building on the foundation of the past. The campaign runs from November 1, 2022, to February 28, 2023.
OASC is a nonprofit organization founded by Mrs. Vassie D. Wright on February 14, 1945, to study the biographies of African American authors, review their books, and learn the true history of African people throughout the Diaspora. That same year, Mrs. Wright worked with Dr. Carter G. Woodson to charter Our Authors Study Club, Inc. as the Los Angeles branch of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Inc. (ASALH) www.asalh.org. In 1950, the Mayor of Los Angeles joined OASC to establish official month-long celebrations at L.A. City Hall. That practice continues today, making OASC the founders of Black History Celebrations in Los Angeles and the originators of all of the Mayors’ city-wide diverse celebrations.
OASC shares the vision of ASALH to be the premier Black Heritage learned society with a strong network and partners whose diverse and inclusive membership will continue the Woodson and Wright legacy, established by Dr. Carter G. Woodson in 1915, and empower through knowledge and racial understanding, an appreciation of African American history and culture.
During these uncertain times in which the very nature of what OASC and ASALH do—the teaching of areas of Black History that has been legally banned in seven U.S. states as “history that makes people uncomfortable”, OASC continues to present its annual month-long city-wide celebration, youth oratorical competition, Black History tour, monthly meetings, special Black History Speakers and more.
