Elithair, a leading hair transplant clinic certified by the Turkish Health Ministry, recently released its new study, “Hair Loss Impact: U.K. Hair Confidence Report 2026,” examining how hair loss affects men’s self-confidence, social experiences, and mental well-being across the United Kingdom. Elithair conducted the research in collaboration with Censuswide in November 2025, surveying 2,000 U.K. men aged 18 and older.

The report provides insight into how appearance-related pressures — particularly hair loss — are shaping confidence and behaviour in an era of increased social comparison.

The research uncovered that over half of men (55%) were worried about their hairline receding, with 48% also reporting that their hairline is likely to impact their self-confidence. The concern is even stronger among younger men, with 65% of men aged 18–24 reporting that their hairline affects their confidence.

Hair loss was cited as one of several appearance-related factors that influence men’s confidence in the report. Respondents ranked teeth (68%), weight (66%), build and muscles (52%), complexion and skin (50%), and hairline (48%) as the features most likely to affect self-confidence.

While hair concerns ranked fifth overall, they were among the most prominent when respondents were asked which factors were “highly likely” to impact confidence. In that category, hairline concerns ranked third (21%), followed closely by hairstyle (20%).

Notably, the impact of hair loss is keenly felt amongst respondents. According to the survey, men experiencing hair loss were more likely to report negative feelings about their appearance, including feeling older (34%), unattractive (27%) and unhappy (25%). By contrast, having a full head of hair was associated with feelings of confidence (48%), happiness (38%) and attractiveness (37%).

This underscores the rising interest in hair transplantation, which has become one of the most effective long-term solutions for hair loss. According to the ISHRS, more than 700,000 hair transplant procedures are performed worldwide each year, highlighting the growing global interest in surgical hair restoration and the empowerment people can find in restoring their hairline.

It’s also important to recognise the connection between appearance and an individual’s sense of wellbeing and confidence. Elithair’s research revealed that a quarter of all men (25%) say that their appearance negatively impacts their mental health.

In particular, younger generations are more likely to say their appearance negatively impacts their mental health, with 18–24-year-old men being almost two times more likely to report that their appearance negatively impacts their mental health than men aged 25–34.

Dr. Abdulaziz Balwi, co-founder and medical director at leading hair transplant clinic Elithair, discusses the effects of hair loss on mental well-being and shares advice for those experiencing a loss of confidence:

“Hair changes can deeply influence how a person feels, often leading to feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety, or even depression. Because hair is so closely linked to identity and personal appearance, thinning or loss can make individuals feel less confident or attractive and may cause them to withdraw from social or romantic situations. Despite how common it is, there is still a great deal of stigma surrounding hair loss, which can make individuals hesitant to speak openly about their experiences."

"When dealing with the emotional side of hair loss, it’s important to start by opening up about the way you’re feeling, whether that’s to a partner, friend, family member or licensed therapist. Discussing your feelings with others can bring comfort and help you see your experience from a more balanced point of view."

"Alongside emotional support, maintaining a consistent scalp and hair care routine is key. Even small things like using the right products for your hair type or implementing a consistent wash routine can improve appearance and self-esteem."

"When hair loss becomes more severe, it’s important to visit a qualified dermatologist or trichologist who can assess the cause and recommend appropriate treatment options. Depending on the type of hair loss, treatments may include medications, targeted therapies, or hair transplants designed to encourage healthy regrowth. These approaches not only enhance appearance but can also significantly boost personal confidence.”
