New Book on the Philosophy of Economics from Carneades

Have you ever wondered how much your life is worth?  Economists have.  And depending on where you were born the results might disturb you.  The life of an American is valued at anywhere between $7 million and $10 million, but the life of a Liberian is worth only around $65,000.  This means that, according to economists, it is more beneficial to the world to save the life of one American than to save the lives of 100 Liberians.

This paradox and more are the subject of the new book on the value of a life from Carneades: Are All Lives Equal? Why Cost-Benefit Analysis Values Rich Lives More and How Philosophy Can Fix it. The book explores the economic reasoning that leads to this unsettling conclusion, investigates several previous failed responses from philosophers and economists, and offers a new solution that would make economic cost-benefit analysis both more just and more accurate.

The book explores the economic practices of cost-benefit analysis and the valuation of a statistical life through engaging anecdotes and dozens of stunning graphics.  It clearly walks through the process that leads to a useful and important tool for assessing government policies valuing the lives and preferences of the rich more than the poor. Carneades clears away the technical jargon and explains these tools in an intuitive and accessible way.

Beyond merely explaining the economic rationale behind these tools, Carneades puts the economics literature in conversation with the centuries of philosophical tradition which argues that all lives are equal.  With over 40 new thought experiments, the book makes these philosophical ideas relatable and grounded in reality.  With a deep background in philosophy and development economics, Carneades is uniquely positioned to showcase these contradictions and provide a way forward that satisfies the needs of both fields of study.

The book threads the needle between these two acrimonious disciplines, appreciating that cost-benefit analysis is an important tool that should not be discarded, while acknowledging that any tool that values one wealthy life as equal to hundreds of poor lives life needs to be recalibrated.  The book is available from Amazon for $29.99.

United Returning Citizens Launches Partnership with Cleveland School of Cannabis

United Returning Citizens (URC), a non-profit devoted to helping formerly incarcerated people in Northeast Ohio, has joined forces with Cleveland School of Cannabis (CSC), the only State Approved Career School for Cannabis education east of Colorado. This program will help bring more specialized jobs to the Youngstown area by delivering a point of entry into the cannabis industry for entrepreneurs and professionals. The partnership could yield significant economic and social opportunities for the Youngstown community.

According to an article published by Forbes in March of 2021, the cannabis industry had an impressive sales increase of 46% from 2019 to 2020. This translated to $17.5 billion with legal sales for adult use in 14 states and for medical use in 36 states across the United States. These staggering revenue totals have propelled more rallies for cannabis to be legalized in areas where it would commonly make the most economical sense, including Ohio.

“Major corporations have been making millions off of cannabis,” said Dionne Dowdy-Lacey, Executive Director of United Returning Citizens & Founder of URC Grows. “Many community residents already had the innate ability to grow cannabis – How much more rewarding would it be to provide the education about cannabis, its beneficial uses, and its positive effectiveness!”

“With all the growth in the cannabis industry we have still seen a lack of equity. Less than 10% of the industry is represented by residents of the BIPOC community,” said Kevin Greene, Vice President of the Cleveland School of Cannabis. “CSC is committed to helping returning citizens and others with similar interests gain access to the cannabis industry and benefit economically. We are proud to have a partner like URC to drive this mission home.”

About United Returning Citizens - URC Grows

An agriculture-based educational and employment program providing education, employment, and social justice for individuals that have been incarcerated for marijuana-related charges. Recent studies show that the tech industry has made steady progress to elevate more women to leadership roles. According to an April 2022 Deloitte Insights article, "women in tech leadership are making the fastest advances" in narrowing the gender gap.

There are many advantages to putting women in leadership roles: they bring fresh new ideas, different perspectives and unique approaches to problem solving. On top of that, a larger share of female leaders improves workplace diversity and strengthens collaboration in and between teams.

"Helping women succeed is helping our society and economy succeed. The benefits of increasing the share of female leaders are well documented; it's high time for corporations to walk their talk and for women to focus on overcoming the particular challenges that hold them back," said Micha Goebig, a confidence coach who specializes in supporting women in male-dominated industries.

Some challenges commonly faced by women working in male-dominated industries are self-doubt, the dreaded imposter syndrome, fear of not being taken seriously, lack of appropriate role models, and greater stress and anxiety. The Koa Club has now launched a six-month leadership training program, based on monthly two-hour workshops, specifically for women in tech to boldly take on, and learn effective strategies to manage, these issues. The participants are also assigned to Mentorship Huddles™, facilitated by a peer mentor, where they can collaborate closely in a small group setting with other participants from the tech industry, to share insights, best practices and helpful encouragement throughout the length of the program.

"In addition to organizations finding more ways to elevate and support female talent, it is key to help their women overcome issues that hold them back, so that they can succeed in attaining leadership roles and thrive once they get there," said Susan Seah, CEO and founder of The Koa Club.

The Women in Tech Leadership Program kicks off on September 14, 2022, with a roundtable discussion featuring powerhouse women IT leaders, including Lisa Cohen, Head of Data Science at Twitter; Cyra Richardson, Chief Product Officer at Attabotics; and Lisa Hillman, Deputy Chief Information Officer, Snohomish County, State of Washington.

The Balanced Life Unveils New Brand Identity, Rooted in Core Values

Today The Balanced Life, founded in 2009 by Robin Long, announced the relaunch of its brand as Lindywell. Centered around a "Grace over Guilt" approach, Lindywell provides programs, tools and coaching to help a global community of millions of women in over 169 countries shift their approach to mental and physical health. Through intentional and effective Pilates workouts and self-care resources, Lindywell helps its community members overcome negative habitual thinking, while revitalizing their overall strength and health.

The inspiration for Lindywell, Pilates and Balanced Living with Robin Long, comes directly from three women Robin regards as strong, powerful and resilient: her mom, Linda, her aunt, Judy, and her grandmother, Lindy — which are characteristics Lindywell strives to cultivate in its community. Lindywell was born from Robin's complicated relationship with exercise and body image as a competitive dancer and athlete due to the rigidity, the unhealthy messaging and the decision fatigue that accompanied it. Instead, Lindywell embodies balance and fulfillment, intentionally designed to help to redefine the way women approach fitness, nourishment and health by cueing the brain to create new pathways and disrupt dysfunctional habits.

"With the power of Pilates at our core, we embrace positivity, authenticity and small changes that lead to real results. We don't buy the lie that we have to do more and eat less to live a healthy life," said Robin Long, founder, CEO and lead instructor of Lindywell. "For our community, this isn't a fad or something new, for more than 12 years we have been redefining the idea of progress. And, we're just getting started … there's much to do."

Lindywell blends intuitive Pilates instruction with realistic healthy eating that will help women build consistency for balanced living, founded on three core values: accessible Pilates, attainable nourishment, and a thriving mindset. "Grace over guilt" encourages consistency, enjoyable experiences and sustainable results to help every woman live life to the fullest.

Coinciding with the rebrand, Lindywell relaunches its on-demand fitness and wellness app, available for iOS and Android devices. At the time of launch, the community-driven Lindywell program provides access to 250+ on-demand Pilates workout videos that can be accessed via phone, tablet, computer or cast to a television, plus exclusive monthly workout calendars and curated recipes by Lindywell registered dietitians — all rooted in a community of positivity and support. Plans range from monthly ($27), six-month ($24/month) or twelve-month ($19/month) options.

The Lindywell rebrand can be experienced through its website, fitness app, podcast, newsletter, social media channels (@wearelindywell) and merchandise. Visit www.lindywell.com to start a free 14-day trial and discover balanced living through Pilates, nourishment and mindset together.

Jelenew's New Product Line has Set Off a New Wave in Cycling Industry

Earlier, a new product line was launched by the American female avant-garde cycling brand Jelenew. Its products include the Racing Collection, based on long-lasting endurance riding, and the Comfort Collection, which retains the functionality and practicality of sportswear, combined with haute couture aesthetics, to bring cyclists to various scenarios anytime, anywhere. The brand's initial drive was to apply cycling-friendly, versatile materials and haute couture aesthetics to people's daily lives so that people could use its products both in the city and outdoors. And take this to bring sports and outdoor culture into the lives of urbanites and make more women love cycling. Once the product under this brand-new concept was launched, a whirlwind was set off by netizens on social platforms. In addition to traditional cycling distance mobilizers, many fashion KOLs, models, and artists have put on Jelenew and posted their sustainable and healthy cycling ideas on social media, igniting new fashion trends and fashion frenzy.

This phenomenon is rare in cycling brands that only emphasize sports functions in the past. Driven by social factors such as the epidemic, soaring oil prices, and "slow travel" traffic road planning and policies in various places, the cycling culture has prevailed, and cycling has changed from a competitive sport to a new way of life and culture. But most cycling jerseys on the market are all about performance and conservative style. The best jersey and shorts are about function, but only a few cyclists will wear them. Modern people live on the go and are constantly asked to make compromises, which means every kind of restriction. They want to live a life where they don't need to change clothes because of scenes and situations. And Jelenew's Comfort Cycling Collection is designed to deal with this situation. This series retains the functionality and practicability of sportswear, combined with high-definition and simple aesthetics, to bring cycling enthusiasts clothes that can cope with work, sports, and exercise scenes anytime, anywhere.

Jelenew fuses haute couture design and functionality, preserving the materials and functionality of cycling gear, delivering a durable, haute couture aesthetic based on long-lasting endurance riding. Jelenew's features a range of elusive colors and takes on a minimalist perspective in its aesthetics. The four-way-stretch fabric consists of micro-perforation yarns, increasing airflow and comfort during hot weather. Jelenew also embeds the concept of environmental protection into the brand DNA, using natural, additive-free sunscreen and extremely quick-drying fabrics to provide consumers with a healthy and comfortable riding experience. The reference to haute couture makes Jelenew's cycling clothing better fit and more wrapping, and the original three-point V-shaped structure riding saddle provides a healthy and comfortable riding experience. Jelenew said that the brand product co-creators with diverse backgrounds worldwide participate in the product design process, and all products would be repeatedly tested and modified before they are introduced to the market. They believe that cycling, like art, is a way of self-expression. Some industry insiders said that the return of leisure sports style and the cross-border style integration of Jelenew sportswear and luxury fashion is also one of the reasons for attracting young consumer groups.

Di Liu, Jelenew's creative director, said: "We have an incredibly diverse consumer base, and brands appeal to different people for different reasons, but one thing in common is that we all love cycling. The life symbol that gives value is integrated into the cyclist's life. No one can resist a healthy body and a free and full soul. Jelenew is more like a carrier, a carrier of self-discovery and self-expression, through which you'll see how people can personalize themselves according to their needs."
