MindSite News, a nonprofit digital news publication that reports on mental health, has hired investigative reporter Josh McGhee to cover the intersection of criminal justice and mental health.
MindSite News launched in September 2021 as the only news site focused solely on mental health reporting. Its writers and editors are veteran journalists who have written for dozens of publications and won numerous awards.
"We are thrilled to bring Josh McGhee on board to cover the mental health and criminal justice systems," said Rob Waters, founding editor of MindSite News. "He will apply his experience in data reporting to dig into the ways these systems are failing people whose principal crime is having a mental illness."

McGhee grew up in Chicago's Tinley Park and has worked at the Chicago Reporter, DNAinfo and Injustice Watch, writing data-driven stories on courts, policing, public defense and discriminatory sentencing. He is secretary of the Chicago chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists and a Peter Lisagor Award winner for Best Feature Series in 2016. He also served as writer and producer of "Exodus," a series on Black migration to and from Chicago.

Propel Center Launches Three-Part Junior Music Executive Accelerator Series to Inspire HBCU Students to Become Future Music Industry Executives
Propel Center, in commemoration of Black Music Month, joined with five of Propel's institutional partners to successfully launch the first of the three-part C3 Series, an executive music industry pipeline program to promote music entrepreneurship in tech.
The accelerator series, the acronym of which stands for Create, Collaborate and Connect, will work to increase the leadership pipeline in today's music industry for HBCU students and young people of color with the aim of fulfilling these three ambitions by providing participants with an all-access pass to learn directly from some of the music industry's greatest minds, executives and tastemakers.
The limited C3 Series will run through March 2023, with the program mission to ensure that the pipeline of diverse leadership reaches and includes HBCU talent, while fast-tracking the next generation of executive leaders in music marketing, music public relations, tech and production. The inaugural participants, which included more than 60 students convened in master classes hosted at Clark Atlanta University, hailed from Bethune-Cookman University, Jackson State University, Clark Atlanta University, Edward Waters University and Bishop State Community College.
As part of C3's project-based, learning focused curriculum, each of the students were tasked with presenting a potential new artist to the consumer market by curating the needed music assets, and then working to implement a tailored marking and communications campaign. The program, funded by the Industry Impact Grants made available to eligible Propel Center HBCU member institutions, is co-facilitated by respected executives, Steve Higgs, COO, Preach Records/Ingrooves and head of A&R, and Cortez Bryant, co-CEO of the management firm Blueprint Group and adjunct professor at his alma mater, Jackson State University.
Guest speakers for the Black Music Month master class roll-out included Bryant and Higgs, Shawn Gee, partner/president at Live Nation Urban, Gee Roberson, co-CEO at Blueprint Group, Tuo Clark, SVP of A&R at Def Jam, Josh Raiford of Pandora/Sirius XM, Grammy Award-Winning producer Drummaboy, Dominique Simpson, CEO of CMPR, Inc. and music-producer Fresh Ayr.
"The new C3 Series program is just another example of the innovative, empowering work that's happening at Propel," said Dr. Charles J. Gibbs, president, Propel Center HBCU Consortium. "As we look to continue to provide our students with a pathway to help shape the future of the music industry, it's imperative that we expose them to the limitless executive opportunities beyond artist careers," he added.
"There are countless more possibilities—and a greater likelihood of achieving success—in the many roles that exist to display talent behind the scenes making things happen in music, and through this accelerator platform we're training our students to be the best prepared and ready to step into those roles."
"The Bethune-Cookman University Music Mogul project created at C3 with the Propel grant is proving to be a successful experiential learning program for our students who are participating in this unique pilot project," stated professor Sylvester Polk of BCU. "Our students are enjoying their experience and the wealth of knowledge that is being provided to them," he continued. "They had a rare chance to experience real-world industry operations, were in recording studios and attended master classes with seasoned industry professionals. This has been a necessary and vital complement to what we are doing in the classroom."

Zabon Ramen Opens Second Location
Zabon Ramen, a unique ramen restaurant originated in Japan, announced today it will open a second location in Anaheim, California in the Anaheim Packing District. National Alliance for Hispanic Health Releases Data on Mental Health Crisis in Hispanic Communities
"The assault on the mental well-being of our communities reflect the disproportionate physical, emotional, and financial impacts the COVID-19 pandemic has had on Hispanic communities," said Jane L. Delgado, PhD, MS, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, the Nation's leading Hispanic health advocacy group. To underscore the needs and to mark the start of National Minority Mental Health Month (July 2022), the National Alliance for Hispanic Health released a series of infographics to highlight the crisis that exists among Hispanic high school students as well as for Hispanic adults.
According to findings released in the infographics, nearly 1 in 5 Hispanic high school students (19.7%) seriously considered suicide and nearly half (46.6%) reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed a decade-long trend of students' declining mental health into a national emergency. The mental health challenges faced by students today are alarming and demand urgent action."
The data for adults is also concerning. The data from June 2020 revealed that Hispanic adults were the community most likely to report at least one adverse mental health condition, including anxiety disorder or depressive disorder. Moreover, Hispanics were the group most likely to have considered suicide. Furthermore, treatment rates for Hispanic individuals living with a mental illness are alarmingly low. In 2020, only about a third of Hispanic adults with a mental illness received treatment, compared to nearly half of all non-Hispanic individuals.

GrowBoston! Graduates its First Cohort of Fifteen Contract-Ready Companies to Support Supplier Capacity Development
Today, the first GrowBoston! cohort of 15 Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (MWBE) will graduate at a ceremony attended by Midori Morikawa, Deputy Chief of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion, the City of Boston, Darrell Byers, CEO of Interise, and Roxann Cooke, Managing Director and Regional Director, JPMorgan Chase, New England.
This innovative partnership between the City of Boston and Interise highlights the importance of creating pathways with the Supplier Diversity Office for minority business owners and their employees. Fifteen dedicated MWBE business owners located in several Boston neighborhoods; including, Dorchester, Hyde Park, East Boston, and Roslindale, were accepted into the hands-on executive education program providing entrepreneurs intensive training in business operations, and financial management, strategy, and procurement development.
